Headshot Prep Guide For Young Actors

Getting ready for your headshot session is essential to ensure your photos reflect your true personality and talent. Follow these tips to feel confident and prepared on the day of the shoot!

1. Wardrobe

  • Keep it Simple: Choose solid-colored shirts, free of logos, patterns, or graphics. Mid-tone colors like blues, greens, and grays work great. Avoid overly bright colors or stark black and white.

  • Comfortable Fit: Make sure your clothing fits well but isn’t too tight or too loose. A classic t-shirt, blouse, or button-up shirt can work, depending on your style.

  • Layers: Consider bringing a jacket, hoodie, denim shirt, or cardigan to add some variety. Avoid anything too bulky or distracting.

  • Bring Options: Bring a few different tops so you have some choices on the day. Consider bringing tops with different textures, such as knitwear, cotton, or silk. Textures can add subtle interest to your photos without overwhelming them. I’ll help you decide which works best for the shoot.

2. Grooming

  • Hair: Get a haircut about a week before the shoot so it looks fresh but natural by the time of the session. Avoid experimenting with a new style right before the shoot. On the day, style your hair how you usually would.

    • For Female Actors: If you have long hair, bring hair ties or clips in case you want to experiment with different looks. It’s also a good idea to wear your hair down for some shots and pull it back for others.

    • For Male Actors: If you shave, do so the night before to avoid any redness or irritation.

  • Skin: Moisturize your face the night before and on the day of the shoot. If you have any blemishes, don’t worry—I can retouch small imperfections in post-production.

  • Makeup (optional):

    • For Female Actors: You can wear light makeup if you'd like, but keep it natural. Avoid heavy foundation or bold colors. If you wear makeup regularly, bring some for touch-ups.

    • For Male Actors: Makeup is not necessary, but if you prefer to wear any, keep it minimal to avoid a heavily made-up look.

3. Rest and Hydration

  • Sleep: Make sure you get a good night’s sleep before the shoot so you look and feel refreshed.

  • Hydrate: Drink plenty of water the day before and the day of the shoot to help your skin look its best.

4. Expression and Posing

  • Practice Expressions: Think about different emotions or characters you want to portray in your headshot—serious, thoughtful, joyful. Practice subtle expressions in front of a mirror to see what feels natural.

  • Relaxed Posing: I’ll guide you through the process, but try to keep your body loose and natural. Small adjustments in posture can make a big difference in headshots.

5. Bring Your Personality

Remember, your headshot should showcase who you are as an actor. Bring your energy and confidence to the shoot, and most importantly, have fun! A relaxed, comfortable vibe will shine through in your photos.
